How to fix Wi-Fi dead zones (and when mesh actually helps)
Why dead zones happen
A dead zone is where signal from a single router is too weak for a usable connection: distance, wall/floor construction, and interference each cut signal strength. A single router cannot fix physics; you either move the access point closer or add another one.
Ranked fixes
- Wire the far end first. An Ethernet run to a switch or AP beats every wireless trick. Systems here all support optional Ethernet backhaul (TP-Link, NETGEAR, eero, ASUS, Google all document wired backhaul).
- Add a mesh node on the dead floor. Place the node roughly halfway between the router and the dead zone, not inside the dead zone itself.
- Prefer dedicated-backhaul tri-band for heavy use. Tri-band systems (Orbi 770, Deco BE63/BE77, ZenWiFi BT10, eero Pro 7) reserve a radio for node-to-node traffic so client speeds drop less through each hop.
- Match node count to floor count. One node per floor is the usual starting point for wood-frame homes; concrete may need more.
